Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan resigns from Modi Cabinet

Hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet reshuffle,  Union minister Dr Harsh Vardhan resigned from the post of health minister. The development assumes greater significance coming as it does against the backdrop of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Besides Harsh Vardhan, many other Union ministers, including Union Minister of State for Environment Babul Supriyo, Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal "Nishank", Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister D V Sadananda Gowda and Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar, resigned on Wednesday ahead of the reshuffle.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sarbananda Sonowal, Narayan Rane, Bhupendra Yadav and Meenakshi Lekhi are set to join the government, said sources, as they were among ministers who visited PM Modi’s residence today.

This is the first revamp of the Council of Ministers since PM Modi started his second term in May 2019.
