Veteran actress Farrukh Jaffar passed away at 89

Veteran actress Farrukh Jaffar, best known for her performance as the fiesty Fatima Begum, wife of megastar Amitabh Bachchan's character in “Gulabo Sitabo”, died on Friday at a hospital in Lucknow due to age related ailments. She was 89.

“She was admitted to the hospital on October 4 due to breathlessness. She was not well. Her lungs were unable to take the oxygen that had been given to her. She passed away in the evening at around 6 pm,” Jafar's elder daughter Mehru Jafar said.

Jafar’s grandson Shaaz Ahmad also shared the news of her demise on Twitter. “My grandmother and wife of Freedom fighter, Ex MLC Mr S. M. Jaffar and Veteran Actress Mrs Farrukh Jafar passed away today at 7 pm in Lucknow,” he wrote.

Jaffer, who was one of the first radio announcers of Vividh Bharti Lucknow in 1963, began her on screen journey with the 1981 classic “Umrao Jaan”, in which she played Rekha's mother. Some of her other notable performances were in Aamir Khan-backed “Peepli Live”, Salman Khan's "Sultan",  Nawazuddin Siddiqui's “Photograph”.

Jafar was married to journalist-politician Syed Muhammad Jaffar, and is survived by daughters — Mehru and Shaheen.
