Former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu along with his son Nara Lokesh was put under house arrest over the mega Atmakur rally called by the Telugu Desam Party against ruling Jagan Mohan Reddy government in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.

Earlier this morning, TDP leaders and workers who were trying to go to Naidu’s residence were stopped by police and were taken into preventive custody, the agency added.

Speaking to reporters outside his residence, Naidu said: “Now I am warning this government. I am warning the police department. You cannot play this kind of politics. You should allow me to go. Whenever they are going to leave, we will go straight to Atmakur.”

Calling the house arrest a murder of “democracy,”  Nara Lokesh accused the state government of running a dictatorship.

“This is dictatorship, we are being stopped in an undemocratic way. TDP leaders and workers are being harassed. YSRCP MLAs are openly threatening us, saying police is with them.”

“The ruling party is trying to strangulate our party across Andhra Pradesh. We were doing our activities in a democratic manner but our entire leadership was put under house arrest. This is dictatorship… TDP leaders and workers are being harassed. YSRCP MLAs are openly threatening us, saying the police are with them,” he added.

Leaders of the ruling YSR Congress were also detained in Guntur as they too gave a call for a counter-rally to highlight alleged attacks on party workers during the TDP regime.

Tempers in Guntur were already high, with the state police imposing Section 144 in Palanadu area since yesterday.
