Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who is aiming for a hat-trick from Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency, suffered a head injury while performing 'Tulabharam' ritual at the Gandhari Amman Kovil temple in Thampanoor on Monday.

According to reports, Tharoor made the 'Tulabharam' offering in connection with the Vishu festival in Kerala.  The Congress leader was accompanied by his family members and party leaders and workers including MLA, V S Sivakumar. As he was offering 'Tulabharam' using sugar at the Gandhari Amman Devi temple in the city the weighing balance collapsed and a heavy metal portion hit on his head, causing a deep wound.

He was taken to Trivandrum Medical College hospital for preliminary treatment, after which he was shifted to a super-speciality hospital. He got 11 stitches - six and five each, on both sides of the head and is out of danger, doctors said.

'Thulabharam' is a Hindu ritual in which a person is weighed against a commodity such as flowers, grains, fruits and similar articles in temples and the equal value or quantity is offered as donation.

Tharoor is up against the NDA’s Kummanam Rajasekharan, a BJP leader and former Governor of Mizoram; and the LDF’s C Divakaran, a former trade union leader as well as the sitting MLA of the Nedumangad constituency.

Kerala has 20 Lok Sabha seats and the State will go to poll on April 23.
