Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu began a day-long fast in New Delhi on Monday, demanding special category status for the state and fulfilment of commitments made at the time of bifurcation.  The TDP president is staging the Dharma Porata Deeksha at the Andhra Pradesh Bhavan at 8 am after paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.

The CM tweeted: "Live from my day-long hunger strike against the central government, New Delhi. #DharmaPorataDeeksha #APDemandsJust."

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief is likley to be joined by his cabinet colleagues, MPs, state legislators, and leaders of students and employees groups and mass organisations.

Leaders of various non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parties are likely to visit the Andhra Bhavan to express their solidarity with Naidu, the Chief Minister's Office said.

Naidu will also submit a memorandum to President Ram Nath Kovind on February 12.

The Chief Minister has done 11 such fasts in various districts of AP and this one would be the first one to be held outside the state.

The Telugu Desam Party had walked out the BJP-led NDA last year protesting the "injustice" done to Andhra Pradesh after its bifurcation.
