Congress activists protests against screening of The Accidental Prime Minister

Vijay Ratnakar Gutte directed The Accidental Prime Minister' which got released yesterday amid several controversies has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. The biographical political film starring Anupam Kher, Akshay Khanna, Arjun Mathur and Ajit Satbhai has generated severe discontent among Congress leaders and workers due to the depiction of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. 

The screening of the movie was stopped at a central Kolkata cinema hall on Friday following protest demonstration by Youth Congress workers. Several Congress leaders in Kolkata, tore apart the screen of the movie theatre before the show, due to which the show had to be dismissed. 

“We will hold such demonstrations at every cinema hall where the movie is released. The movie is a gross distortion of facts,” a state Congress leader told.

"We have cancelled the screening for the noon show due to law and order situation. We are yet to take a call on the other shows,"  a Hind Cinema official told.

This agitated actor Anupam Kher, who is playing the lead role of Dr Manmohan Singh in the movie, which is based on a book written by his former media advisor Sanjay Baru. Speaking on the protests Kher said “This is intolerance. The curtains were torn apart in Kolkata, where the Accidental Prime Minister was being shown.”

Speaking on the incident, a senior police official said that “The afternoon screening of the movie was dismissed over safety reasons, as a group was protesting outside the hall.”

The Accidental Prime Minister is based on a book with the same title written by Sanjaya Baru, former Prime Minister Singh's media advisor. Anupam Kher played the titular as PM Manmohan Singh. The role of Baru is being played by Akshaye Khanna.
