Ten Sabarimala pilgrims killed in Tamil Nadu road accident

Ten Sabarimala pilgrims from Telangana died in a road accident near Thirumayam town in Pudukottai district of central Tamil Nadu on Sunday after their vehicle collided head-on with a lorry, police said.

The victims were on their way back from Rameswaram when a lorry collided head on with the Tempo vehicle in which they were travelling. The incident happened at around 3 pm near Tirumayam bypass road in Pudukottai district. Eight of them died on the spot and two succumbed to injuries later. Five others have sustained grievous injuries, a senior police officer told, adding that some of the deceased were in their early twenties or early thirties. 

The victims were identified as Suresh (25), M Kumar (22), Sham (22), S Pravin (24) R Nagaraj (35), A Mahesh (28) Krishna (35), M Saai (22) and Anjaneyulu (25). 

“The incident happened at around 3 pm when the tempo in which the Sabarimala pilgrims were travelling from Karaikudi to Pudukottai collided with a lorry that was coming from the opposite direction,” the officer said.

The lorry occupied the right-side of the divider-less, narrow road leading to the collision, he said, adding that an investigation is on.

The injured have been admitted to the Pudukottai government hospital.
