Around 40 people, including children and women were reportedly missing after a boat capsized in Godavari river near Devipatnam in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday.

The illfated boat with around 50 passengers was going from Kondamodalu tribal hamlet on the banks of the river to Rajahmundry, when it overturned near Mantoor village of Devipatnam block at around 5 pm.  It is believed to have capsized due to gusty winds. Officials launched massive rescue operations by using boats and divers. 17 people have been rescued while 23 people are still missing.

Soon after coming to know about the boat mishap, boat owner Mohammad Khaja of Lakshmi Venkateshwara Boat Service surrendered before police in Devipatnam.

According to local people, there were 40 people on boat including a marriage party. Most of the passengers were tribals from the region.

Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu ordered authorities concerned to immediately start rescue operations. He also asked them to extend all possible assistance to the survivors. Rampachodavaram MLA Vantala Rajeshwari also went to the mishap site to oversee the rescue works.
