Expert Review :

Savitri is an actress who needs no introduction. She earned fame and lot of money through her movies and she ruled the South screen for years. Her career witnessed never-seen-before heights and tragic lows, she died in miserable conditions due to financial mismanagement and personal issues.  Set in four decades from 50's to 80's, the movie throws light on some important events of her life both as a superstar and a person, Mahanati covers almost all phases – from childhood until death of Mahanati Savitri.

Keerthy Suresh seems to have delivered her career's best performance playing the title role of Savitri. She is definitely a watcher in this film. Dulquer Salman shines as Gemini Ganesan. His performance is fairly good and surprisingly the chemistry with Keerthy too. Samantha plays her Madhuravani character, quite convincingly. Her ability to emote her feelings at the climax where she talk to coma ridden Mahanati is outstanding. Vijay Deverakonda as Anthony is good. Rajendra Prasad plays a brief yet a pivotal role, which he has done justice to.  Mohanbabu portrayed SVR’s role and he was brilliant. Prakash raj as Chakrapani, Avasarala Srinivas as LV Prasad, Director Krishh as Director KV Reddy are good in their roles. Naga Chaitanya and Shalini Pandey have cameo roles in the film and both fit their roles quite seamlessly.  Bhanupriya, Naresh, Tanikella Bharani, Shalini Pandey and Malavika Nair played smaller roles.

Technical Aspects

Director Nag Ashwin has done a good job at the directorial department, and deserves appreciation for taking up this project.  He has used actors well. Mickey J. Mayor background score, songs are soothing. Especially that ‘Mahaanatiii…’ signature music is haunting. Art work by Avinash has to be applauded for his retro sets. Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao editing clearly helped the movie and it’s pace. Yet, the movie could have been a little crisper and shorter and the first half feels to be draggy, even though the love sequences between Keerthy and Dulquer are on fire. Production values by Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinema are rich.

Second half

In short, MAHANATI will definitely remain as one of the finest outputs by Keerthy Suresh and the film is a true tribute to great actress Savitri Garu.
